Fly Fishing Gear to Bring

Use this checklist of fishing gear and essential clothing items to pack for your next stay on the Margaree River. Where to order online or shop in person for fly tying supplies in Cape Breton and which flies to put in your fly box fishing for Atlantic Salmon.

Fishing Gear – Rods

  • Bring at least two rods.
  • In the spring, water is heavy, the flies larger, using sink tips and leaders.
  • Prime season and into dry fly season, lighter rods are preferred.
  • Selection ranges from singled handed, 8 to 10 foot rods rated for 7-10 weight lines to two handed, switch and spey rods 12 to 15 feet long, rated for 8-12 weight lines.

Fly Fishing Gear – Reels

  • Bring at least two reels. One for each rod and a spare.
  • Bring a quality reel that’s the right size for your rod length.
  • Check your drag system. 200 yards of 20 to 30 pound test backing is recommended.

Fly Fishing Gear – Lines

  • Early Season: Slow, intermediate, sink tip lines and leaders
  • Main season: floating lines

Fly Fishing Gear – Waders

  • A breathable pair of waders. Bring a spare if handy
  • Felt bottomed wading boots

  • Marabou
  • Blue Charm

Clothing

  • Under garments and socks for the time of year you’ll be visiting
  • Fleece pants and insulated socks for under your waders
  • Warm sweater or vest for layering
  • Long sleeved shirts and pants
  • Fishing hats, one for rainy weather
  • Quality waterproof rain jacket

Extras

  • Polarized sun glasses
  • Camera/phone and charger and waterproof case
  • Lunchbox or cooler for riverside meals
  • Bug spray and sunscreen
  • All your toiletries
